Chris (Fanclub):
How many songs from the new album "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening" did you write?
Stephan:
I composed the music for 5 of the 6 songs on our new CD "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening."
Chris:
In my opinion, your role as a guitarist is carrying the song without putting your guitar playing in the focus.
Is this true for you or would you prefer playing longer parts in a song, for example extended solo parts?
Stephan:
I agree with your point of view. Because I'm writing many of the songs for Vanden Plas, of course, I could include
longer instrumental parts for me as well as for the other musicians. :-) However, for us at Vanden Plas, it has always
been the song itself that should be at the center. A song only feels good to us, if there is a balance between vocals
and instrumental parts. For example, a song of 10 minutes in total with only 2 minutes of vocals - that has never been
our sort of thing and it most likely won't ever be. But one thing I'd like to point out here is that both "The Ghost Xperiment"
CDs will come with more instrumental parts than the previous CDs.
Chris:
Which song from the new album is your favorite and why?
Stephan:
That's a difficult question ... I think I really like "The Phantoms Of Prends-Toi-Garde." Starting with that loop, the song gets
a special feel and a special mood. The combination of melody and hardness together with the instrumental part in the middle - at
the moment, this song is my favorite with a slight advantage over the others ...
Chris:
How is "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening" different from the last album?
Stephan:
For this comparison, you need to take a look at the last two albums. The two "Chronicles of the Immortals" CDs were based on our rock opera
of the same name. Many parts of the songs [on these two albums] were a lot more orchestral than people were used to hearing from us - although
we have, of course, used classical instruments in our compositions before. "The Ghost Xperiment -Awakening" and its second part, "The Ghost
Xperiment - Illumination", belong to a concept that we spread over two CDs. But we didn't focus on turning it into another theater performance.
That's why there was no need to use an increased amount of classical elements. This enabled us to return to our roots and compose and arrange the
songs regarding their sound and their structures in that style that we have long been known for.
When composing rock operas such as "Everyman" or the new rock opera that we're currently working on, we have plenty of opportunities to let
our "classical-music-side" influence the songs.
Chris:
Where would you rather be when it comes to music: in the studio or on stage?
Stephan:
Composing and recording music in the studio is different from giving regular concerts or contributing to theater performances.
Both have their own appeal, both are a lot of fun.
Chris:
How would you describe the music of Vanden Plas to someone who hasn't heard of you?
Stephan:
If someone was not familiar with this music and, therefore, didn't know common terms like "progressive rock" etc., then I would say:
Melodious hard rock, in which the harmonies, the rhythm and the song structure are varied in order to support the song.
Chris:
What is special about your TTM guitar or the other models that you own?
Stephan:
For quite a long time, it has been difficult to come up something truly new or special for guitars. On the contrary, things that are
advertised as innovations often can't achieve success on the market. I think it's important that a guitarist feels comfortable playing their instrument.
I prefer guitars that not only offer a good sound and an appealing look, but are also easy to play and not too heavy.
My TTM guitars fulfill all of these requirements.
Chris:
You have been part of many different things: rock opera, all kinds of projects and Vanden Plas, of course.
Concerning music, is there something special you would like to achieve or experience?
Stephan:
Something special... There actually are some musicians with whom I'd love to work one day. For example, Tobias Sammet of Avantasia or Edguy respectively.
I think he's just amazing. I'd like to compose songs together with him. This would be really great! Of course, it would also be fantastic if I had the
chance to work with my favorite guitarist John Sykes, who is also a fabulous singer. Both of my wishes are highly unlikely to come true...
But if I had a wish concerning music, then working with these two musicians would be quite high up on my wish list.

Wie viele Songs auf dem neuen Album "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening" hast du geschrieben?
Stephan:
Für die aktuelle CD "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening" habe ich für 5 der 6 Songs die Musik komponiert.
Chris:
Ich würde dich als Gitarrist als eher songdienlich bezeichnen. Siehst du das auch so oder würdest du manchmal
gerne längere Parts im Song ausfüllen, also z.B. längere Soli spielen.
Stephan:
Deine Einschätzung teile ich. Da ich viele Lieder für Vanden Plas schreibe hätte ich durchaus die Möglichkeit längere Instrumentalpassagen sowohl für mich
als auch für die anderen Musiker zu schreiben :-). Bei Vanden Plas steht aber schon immer der Song als solcher im Vordergrund. Es muss ein ausgewogenes Verhältnis
zwischen Gesang und Instrumentalpassagen herrschen, dann fühlen wir uns wohl. Ein Song von z.B. 10 Minuten Länge, bei dem nur 2 Minuten gesungen wird - das war noch
nie unser Ding und wird es auch nie werden. Ich kann aber sagen, dass wir auf beiden "The Ghost Xperiment"-CDs mehr instrumentale Passagen haben als auf unseren vorangegangenen CDs.
Chris:
Welcher Song vom neuen Album ist dein Favorit und warum?
Stephan:
Ganz schwer zu sagen ... Von Anfang an gefiel mir "The Phantoms Of Prends-Toi-Garde" besonders gut. Mit dem Loop am Songanfang hat das Lied direkt ein besonderes Flair und
eine besondere Stimmung. Der Mix aus Melodie und Härte, dazu der instrumentale Mittelpart - momentan ist dieser Song mein Favorit - mit leichtem Vorsprung ...
Chris:
Wie unterscheidet sich "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening" vom letzten Album?
Stephan:
Man muss die letzten beiden Alben zum Vergleich heranziehen. Die beiden "Chronicles of the Immortals"-CDs entstanden auf der Basis unserer gleichnamigen Rockoper.
Die Songs waren dementsprechend in weiten Teilen wesentlich orchestraler gehalten als man es von uns gewohnt war, auch wenn wir natürlich schon früher klassische
Instrumente in unsere Kompositionen eingebaut haben. Bei "The Ghost Xperiment - Awakening" und dem dazugehörigen zweiten Teil "The Ghost Xperiment - Illumination" handelt
es sich ebenfalls um ein Konzept, dass wir auf zwei CDs verteilen, der Fokus lag aber nicht darauf, ein weiteres Bühnenstück daraus zu machen. Daher war ein vermehrter
Einsatz an klassischen Elementen nicht zwingend notwendig, und für uns war es dadurch möglich wieder mehr zu unseren Wurzeln zurückzukehren und die Songs soundtechnisch
und von ihrer Struktur in dem Stil zu komponieren und arrangieren, für den wir seit Langem bekannt sind. Beim Komponieren unserer Rockopern wie z.B. "Everyman" oder der
neuen Rockoper, an der wir gerade arbeiten, haben wir genug Möglichkeiten, unsere "klassische Seite" in unsere Songs einfließen zu lassen.
Chris:
Wo bist du lieber in puncto Musik: im Studio oder auf der Bühne?
Stephan:
Komponieren und Musik im Studio einspielen ist etwas anderes als reguläre Konzerte zu geben oder bei Theateraufführungen mitzuwirken.
Beides hat seinen Reiz, beides macht sehr viel Spaß.
Chris:
Wie würdest du die Musik von Vanden Plas jemandem beschreiben, der euch überhaupt nicht kennt?
Stephan:
Wenn sich jemand mit dieser Musik nicht auskennt und daher mit gängigen Begriffen wie "Progressive Rock" usw. nichts anfangen kann, dann würde ich sagen:
Melodiöser Hardrock, bei dem die Harmonien, die Rhythmik und die Songstruktur songdienlich variiert werden.
Chris:
Was ist das Besondere an deiner TTM-Gitarre, bzw. an den Modellen, die du besitzt?
Stephan:
Schon seit Langem ist es sehr schwer, etwas wirklich Neues oder auch Besonderes für Gitarren zu entwickeln. Im Gegenteil. Oft können sich Neuerungen, die als
Innovationen angepriesen werden, nicht auf dem Markt durchsetzen. Ich denke, es ist wichtig, dass der Gitarrist sich auf seinem Instrument wohlfühlt. Ich bevorzuge
Gitarren, die neben einem guten Sound und einer ansprechenden Optik v.a. eine einfache Bespielbarkeit haben und nicht zu schwer sind. Das alles bieten mir meine TTM-Gitarren.
Chris:
Du hast ja schon sehr viel verschiedene Sachen gemacht: Rockoper, verschiedene Projekte und Vanden Plas. Gibt es für dich noch einen besonderen Wunsch in Bezug auf die Musik?
Stephan:
Ein besonderer Wunsch... Es gibt durchaus Musiker, mit denen ich sehr gerne einmal zusammenarbeiten würde. Z.B. mit Tobias Sammet von Avantasia bzw. Edguy. Ich finde ihn großartig.
Mit ihm gemeinsam Songs zu komponieren, das wäre etwas Tolles. Natürlich wäre es auch grandios, wenn es die Möglichkeit gäbe mit meinem Lieblingsgitarristen John Sykes, der ja auch
ein fantastischer Sänger ist, zusammenzuarbeiten. Realistisch gesehen wird beides sehr wahrscheinlich nicht zustande kommen ... Aber wenn ich einen Wunsch in Bezug auf die Musik frei
hätte, dann würde die Zusammenarbeit mit diesen beiden Musikern bei mir ganz oben stehen.
