album The Empyrean Equation Of The Long Lost Things, Alessandro del Vecchio gave us an interview.

Hello Alessandro, thank you very much for taking the time for us.
Here is my first question: What's your musical background and training?
Alessandro:
I'm self-taught, learnt my favourite records by ear when I was young and then informally studies harmony and developed technique.
You can't really fail if you learn "Selling England By The Pound" by Genesis, "images And Words" by Dream Theater, all
Yngwie Malmsteen first 8 albums, all Deep Purple/Rainbow/Whitesnake albums and "Trilogy" by EL&P before you turn 18!
Chris:
What was your first instrument?
Alessandro:
Both keyboards and vocals.
Chris:
What drew you to the keyboard/piano?
Alessandro:
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen was my "I see the light" experience.
Chris:

How does it feel to be the first new Vanden Plas member since the band's formation in 1990?
Alessandro:
It feels really strange, but in a good way. Even to look at the picture and see my face among the other VP members is a great feeling.
I know it's been a big step for the band, that's why I come in with the highest respect.
Chris:
When did you first encounter Vanden Plas?
Alessandro:
"Colour Temple" when it came out really stroke me as a prog-kid. I was all into prog, and still I am. But back then, music wise
that was my cup of tea and I instantly fell in love with the songs and Andy's voice which I find really unique!
Chris:
What's your favorite Vanden Plas song?
Alessandro:
"In My Universe" is really one of the band's best tunes and also any song from "Christ0". That really is a record I wished I had
written and taken part of since it came out!
Chris:
How do you balance preserving the band's sound while also adding own unique contributions?
Alessandro:
I think it just comes natural. I'm a different kind of keyboard player compared to Günter but we share the same goal which is
playing for the song. I think by listening to the whole album you can have that homely feeling of listening to a classic VP album, but
some of the elements make it sound fresh, like a more extensive use of the Hammond organ and wha synth leads.

What's your favorite track from the upcoming album and how do your keyboard parts contribute to it?
Alessandro:
"March Of The Saints". It has all I love about VP and prog. You can really hear my influences in prog on the riffs, pads, pianos, and leads.

What inspired you to adopt a vegan and straight edge lifestyle? (For those who may not be familiar, could you explain what "straight edge" means?)
Alessandro:
Straight Edge means no drugs, no smoke, no alcohol, and more strictly no junk/sodas/caffeine. I've always been like this, I've never been
attracted by these substances and I like to control myself. Also, matter or luck, or my body knew already, I have a chronic kidney condition
which I could have potentially died from if I drank alcohol and smoked. I've been vegan now for 15 years, and I did it only for my respect
for animals. I really don't want to cause any harm where it's easy to change. There's no evidence you live off dairy and any animal product,
but I really did it and do it for the animal. My whole family is vegan and we couldn't be happier.
Chris:
Speaking of animals, what's your favorite animal?
Alessandro:
Definitely wolves!
Chris:
And what's your favorite food?
Alessandro:
Green curry with tofu.
Chris:
How do veganism and the straight edge attitude influence your life and your music?
Alessandro:
For sure this kind of lifestyle means I'm hyper focused on time and life. I'm a student of stoicism too, this means I really try my best to be the
best human being for myself, those who depend on me, and the whole human and animal community. At least I try.

Hallo Alessandro, vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit für uns nimmst.
Hier ist meine erste Frage: Was ist dein musikalischer Hintergrund und deine Ausbildung?
Alessandro:
Ich bin Autodidakt, habe meine Lieblingsplatten schon in jungen Jahren nach Gehör gelernt und dann informell Harmonielehre gelernt
und meine Technik entwickelt. Man kann eigentlich nicht scheitern, wenn man "Selling England By The Pound" von Genesis, "Images And Words"
von Dream Theater, alle ersten 8 Alben von Yngwie Malmsteen, alle Deep Purple/Rainbow/Whitesnake-Alben und "Trilogy" von EL&P lernt, bevor man 18 wird!
Chris:
Was war dein erstes Instrument?
Alessandro:
Sowohl Tasteninstrumente als auch Gesang.
Chris:
Was hat dich zum Keyboard/Klavier hingezogen?
Alessandro:
"Bohemian Rhapsody" von Queen hat mir [diesbezüglich] zur Erleuchtung verholfen.
Chris:

Wie fühlt es sich an, das erste neue Mitglied von Vanden Plas zu sein, seit der Gründung der Band 1990?
Alessandro:
Es fühlt sich wirklich seltsam an, aber auf eine gute Weise. Fotos zu anzuschauen und mein Gesicht unter den anderen VP-Mitgliedern zu sehen,
ist ein tolles Gefühl. Ich weiß, dass es für die Band ein großer Schritt war, deshalb trete ich mit dem höchsten Respekt auf.
Chris:
Wann bist du zum ersten Mal auf Vanden Plas gestoßen?
Alessandro:
"Colour Temple" hat mich als Prog-Kid wirklich beeindruckt, als er veröffentlicht wurde. Ich war ganz in Prog verliebt, und das bin ich immer noch.
Aber damals, musikalisch gesehen, war das genau mein Ding, und ich habe mich sofort in die Songs und Andys Stimme verliebt, die ich wirklich einzigartig finde!

Was ist dein Lieblingslied von Vanden Plas?
Alessandro:
"In My Universe" ist wirklich einer der besten Songs der Band, und auch jeder Song von "Christ 0". Das ist wirklich ein Album, an dem seit seiner
Veröffentlichung gerne mitgeschrieben und mitgewirkt hätte!
Chris:
Wie schaffst du es, den Klang der Band zu bewahren und gleichzeitig eigene einzigartige Beiträge beizusteuern?
Alessandro:
Ich denke, das gibt sich einfach natürlich. Ich bin ein anderer Typ Keyboarder im Vergleich zu Günter, aber wir haben dasselbe Ziel, nämlich für
den Song zu spielen. Ich denke, wenn man sich das ganze Album anhört, kann man dieses vertraute Gefühl haben, ein klassisches VP-Album zu hören,
aber einige Elemente machen es neu, wie zum Beispiel eine ausgiebigere Verwendung der Hammond-Orgel und Wha-Synth-Leads.

Was ist dein Lieblingsstück vom kommenden Album und wie tragen deine Keyboard-Parts dazu bei?
Alessandro:
Mein Lieblingsstück vom kommenden Album ist "March Of The Saints". Es vereint alles, was ich an VP und Prog liebe. Man kann wirklich meine
Einflüsse im Prog in den Riffs, Pads, Klavier und Leads hören.
Chris:

Was hat dich dazu inspiriert, Dich für einen veganen und straight-edge Lebensstil zu entscheiden? (Für diejenigen, die den Begriff nicht
kennen, könntest du erklären, was "straight edge" bedeutet?)
Alessandro:
"Straight Edge" bedeutet kein Drogenkonsum, nicht rauchen, keinen Alkohol trinken und, streng genommen, auch kein Junkfood, keine Limonaden
und kein Koffein. Ich war schon immer so, ich wurde nie von diesen Substanzen angezogen und ich mag es, die Kontolle zu behalten.
Außerdem - aus welchem Grund auch immer, sei es Schicksal oder Glück, oder mein Körper wusste es bereits - habe ich eine chronische
Nierenerkrankung, an der ich potenziell gestorben wäre, wenn ich Alkohol getrunken und geraucht hätte. Ich bin jetzt seit 15 Jahren Veganer
und ich habe nur aus Respekt vor Tieren dazu entschieden. Ich möchte einfach kein Leid erzeugen, wenn es so einfach, etwas zu änden.
Es gibt keine Beweise dafür, dass man von Milchprodukten und tierischen Produkten lebt, aber ich habe es wirklich für die Tiere getan und tue es noch.
Meine ganze Familie ist vegan und wir könnten nicht glücklicher sein.
Chris:
Wo wir gerade von Tieren sprechen. Welches ist Dein Lieblingstier?
Alessandro:
Definitiv Wölfe!
Chris:
Und was ist Dein Lieblingsessen?
Alessandro:
Grünes Curry mit Tofu.
Chris:
Wie beeinflussen Veganismus und die Straight-Edge-Einstellung dein Leben und deine Musik?
Alessandro:
Diese Art von Lebensstil bedeutet sicherlich, dass ich hyperfokussiert auf Zeit und das Leben bin. Ich folge außerdem den Lehren der Stoiker,
was bedeutet, dass ich mein Bestes gebe, um der beste Mensch zu sein für mich selbst, diejenigen, die von mir abhängig sind, und die gesamte
menschliche und tierische Gemeinschaft. Zumindest versuche ich das.
