This article series focuses on the tools used by popular guitarists. What are their favorite guitars and what is their connection to them? This time, we are talking to Stephan Lill (Vanden Plas, All My Shadows).
When did you start playing the guitar and can you still remember your first guitar?
I started playing when I was 12 years old. I grew up in a small village near Kaiserslautern. Actual guitar lessons - in today's sense - were not possible there. I received my first lessons from a very nice older lady, but the songs were in the direction of [German traditional folk songs] "Eine Seefahrt, die ist lustig" ("A sea journey is fun") ... But it was a start :-). My first guitar was an acoustic guitar from Höfner, at the time my whole pride.
Do you still have this guitar?
Yes, I'm very glad about that. I once lent it to a school mate for a few years after I started playing electric guitar. Fortunately, I got it back. My first electric guitar was an SG copy from Eko - being a fan of Angus Young, that was of course great for me. However, this one is no longer in my possession. At that time, it was just the way things were that you had to sell your old instrument first and then use the money and some savings to buy a new and hopefully better guitar.
What are your musical influences and who are your favorite guitarists?
Of course, as mentioned above, at the beginning it was AC/DC with Angus Young. I was a huge fan, spent all my pocket money on their LPs, and tried to play along to the songs. Of course, everything by ear, and hundreds of times moving the record needle back to the correct spot. Books and videos came later, and YouTube was not even around then. I still benefit from this today, even though I can now play by sheet music. The skill of figuring out songs by ear, playing by ear, is something that many in today's generation miss out on. They prefer to look up a video on YouTube or get tabs to know how to play the song. This might save lots of time, but doesn't help in developing musician skills. Then came Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, and Accept.
How many guitars do you own and which are your favorites?
I've accumulated quite a few over the years, so I would say too many. Of course, I need several different ones because I play different guitars in the theater than, for example, with Vanden Plas or All My Shadows. And different tunings ... it all adds up. Nevertheless, there are guitars that I don't use as much anymore. Many guitarists know this. You have guitars that you have grown to love, but that don't really get used anymore. But they're too important to you to give up. I have a few that I really like. My Zeal Telecaster, a Peavey Vandenberg, or an LTD EC-1000VB/Duncan. It's not the most expensive, but it plays and sounds great. For me, it doesn't always have to be a guitar in the highest price range. You can also find really good instruments in the mid range.
What do you think makes the perfect guitar or amplifier?
For me, playability and sound are the top priority. Of course, appearance is also important. But a guitar that looks great but is not suitable for my playing style won't get me far. The sound can usually be improved. You can try out different PU, etc.But the foundation must be set Anything else makes no sense. There is no such thing as a perfect amplifier for me. But the Marshall JVM 410 comes very close.
What do you think about the question tube amp or modeler?
I can follow up on the previous question. I used to play a Marshall JVM 410 for a long time, but switched to a modeler a few years ago. For me, this had only advantages. Especially in terms of the sounds for theater productions, but also for the bands. And of course for songwriting. Sometimes you need a very specific sound or effect for a song to be able to turn your ideas into reality. With a modeler, this works without problems, and if you work with it, you get a reasonable result. The problem is usually the integrated cab simulations. I prefer to use IRs instead. Once you get used to all the advantages that such a small box brings, it's hard to imagine going back on tour with cases, racks, boxes, etc. However, it's a different way of playing. At least that's how I feel.
What guitars and amps do you use for recording?
As previously mentioned, my Zeal Telecaster, which is a heavy Tele with Häussel humbuckers, etc. I just love the Telecaster shape. Also, my Peavey Vandenberg. And a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson LP. And a modeler.
If you could only choose one guitar, which one would you pick?
The Peavey Vandenberg.

In dieser Artikel Serie geht es um das Handwerkzeugs beliebter Gitarristen. Welches sind ihre Lieblingsgitarren und wie ist ihr Bezug dazu. Diesmal mit Stephan Lill (Vanden Plas, All My Shadows).
Wann hast du mit dem Gitarre spielen angefangen und kannst du dich noch an deine erste Gitarre erinnern?
Begonnen habe mit 12 Jahren. Ich bin in einem kleinen Dorf in der Nähe von Kaiserslautern aufgewachsen. Wirklicher Gitarrenunterricht - im heutigen Sinn - war da nicht möglich. Ich bekam meinen ersten Unterricht von einer sehr netten älteren Dame, die Lieder waren aber in der Richtung "Eine Seefahrt, die ist lustig" ...Aber es war mal ein Start :-). Meine erste Gitarre war dementsprechend eine akustische Gitarre von Höfner, damals mein ganzer Stolz.
Ist diese Gitarre noch in deinem Besitz?
Ja, darüber bin ich auch sehr froh. Ich hatte sie mal für ein paar Jahre an eine Schulfreundin ausgeliehen, nachdem ich begonnen hatte, elektrische Gitarre zu spielen. Glücklicherweise bekam sie dann aber wieder. Meine erste elektrische Gitarre war eine SG-Kopie von Eko - als Angus Young-Fan war das natürlich großartig für mich. Diese befindet sich aber leider nicht mehr in meinem Besitz. Damals war es halt der Lauf der Dinge, dass man erst sein altes Instrument verkaufen musste, um sich dann mit diesem Geld und etwas Erspartem eine neue und hoffentlich auch bessere Gitarre kaufen zu können.
Was sind deine musikalischen Einflüsse und welche Gitarristen sind deine Favoriten?
Natürlich wie oben erwähnt, zu Beginn AC/DC mit Angus Young. Ich war ein Riesenfan, kaufte mir von meinem Taschengeld alle LPs und versuchte dann, die Songs mitzuspielen. Natürlich alles per Gehör, und hunderte Male die Plattenspielernadel and die entsprechende Stelle zurückgesetzt. Bücher und Videos kamen erst etwas später, von Youtube ganz zu schweigen. Davon zehre ich heute noch, auch wenn ich nach Noten spielen kann. Das Raushören von Liedern, das Spielen nach Gehör, das fehlt vielen in der heutigen Generation etwas. Da schaut man lieber bei Youtube nach oder man holt sich die Tabs um zu wissen, wie es geht. Das spart zwar viel Zeit, das verstehe ich. Aber die Musikalität bleibt etwas auf der Strecke. Dann kamen Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osboure, Dokken und Accept dazu.
Wie viele Gitarren besitzt du und welche sind deine Favoriten?
Es hat sich im Laufe der Jahre einiges angesammelt. Daher würde ich sagen: Zu viele. Ich benötige natürlich schon einige, da ich im Theater andere Gitarren spiele als z.B. bei Vanden Plas oder All My Shadows. Dazu unterschiedliche Stimmungen ... da kommt etwas zusammen. Trotzdem gibt es die eine oder andere Gitarre, die nicht mehr so zum Einsatz kommt. Viele Gitarristen kennen das ja. Man besitzt Gitarren, die man liebgewonnen hat, die aber eigentlich nicht mehr wirklich zum Zug kommen. Aber zum Hergeben sind sie einem zu wichtig. Ich habe einige, die ich wirklich gut finde. Meine Zeal Telecaster, eine Peavey Vandenberg, oder auch eine LTD EC-1000VB/Duncan. Die ist zwar etwas günstiger, lässt sich aber traumhaft spielen und klingt gut. Für mich muss es nicht immer eine Gitarre im teuersten Preissegment sein. Man findet auch im mittleren Preissegment wirklich gute Instrumente.
Was meinst du macht die perfekte Gitarre oder Verstärker aus?
Für mich steht die Bespielbarkeit und der der Sound an erster Stelle. Natürlich ist die Optik auch wichtig. Aber eine Gitarre, die super aussieht, aber - zumindest für meine Spielweise - nicht geeignet ist, die bringt micht nicht weiter. Am Sound kann man meistens noch etwas machen. Andere PU ausprobieren usw. Die Basis muss aber stimmen. Alles andere macht keinen Sinn. Einen perfekten Verstärker gibt es für mich nicht. Aber der Marshall JVM 410 kommt dem sehr nahe.
Was denkst du über die Frage Röhrenamp oder Modeler?
Da kann ich an die obige Frage anschließen. Ich spielte lange einen Marshall JVM 410, bin aber vor ein paar Jahren zum Modeler gewechselt. Für mich hatte das nur Vorteile. V.a. bei den Sounds für die Theaterproduktionen, aber auch für die Bands. Und natürlich beim Songwriting. Manchmal benötigt man für einen Song einen ganz bestimmten Sound oder Effekt, damit man seine Vorstellungen auch in die Tat umsetzen kann. Mit einem Modeler geht das ohne Probleme, und wenn man sich damit beschäftigt, dann bekommt man auch ein vernünftiges Resultat. Das Problem sind meistens die integrierten Cab-Simulationen. Da verwende ich lieber IRs. Wenn man sich an die ganzen Vorteile, die so eine kleine Kiste mit sich bringt, mal gewöhnt hat, dann ist es schwer sich vorzustellen, dass man wieder mit Cases, Racks, Boxen usw auf Tour geht. Allerdings ist es ein anderes Spielen. Zumindest empfinde ich das bei mir so.
Welche Gitarren und Amps benutzt du für Aufnahmen?
Wie oben schon erwähnt meine Zeal Telecaster, das ist allerdings eine Heavy Tele. Mit Häussel-Humbuckern usw. Ich finde die Telecaster-Form an sich einfach gut. Dazu meine Peavey Vandenberg. Aber auch eine Fender Stratocaster oder eine Gibson LP. Und einen Modeler.
Wenn du nur eine einzige Gitarre auswählen dürftest, welche würdest du nehmen?
Die Peavey Vandenberg.
