Stephan Lill's - All my Shadows
It was a huge surprise for me when I found out on Facebook that Stephan Lill and Andy Kuntz had formed a new band. I was convinced that something really special would leave the halls of Bazement Studio.
I've known Vanden Plas for years, lost track of them in between, and then rediscovered them in 2014 with their album "Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld."
In all these years, I have never experienced that they would simply repeat themselves on their compact discs. Günter Werno and Stephan Lill are the two main composers for Vanden Plas and they have always managed to compose extraordinary songs. Featuring the fantastic lyrics by Andy Kuntz, each new album is always a pleasure to listen to. For me, Vanden Plas are unique in the prog metal scene. For example, the works of Avantasia sound like each singer's respective band, Dream Theater's songs are often too dramatic for me and Queensryche unfortunately did not have really good albums for my taste for a while. Ayreon are the only ones that are as varied as Vanden Plas. Of course, their sound is completely different.
I am fascinated by the music of Vanden Plas. The excellent vocals by Andy Kuntz, the cool and mostly song-supporting guitar work by Stephan Lill with his refreshing solos, Günter Werno's excellent keyboard sounds, which shape the sound of Vanden Plas with effects and simplicity, Andreas Lill's drums, which unite with Torsten Reichert's extraordinary bass playing to form the foundation of the songs of Vanden Plas.
In 2018, I founded the German Vanden Plas Fanclub on Facebook and Andy Kuntz asked me if I would like to take this to an international level because he liked what I had done so far. I had created the fanclub and this website because I thought that a band like Vanden Plas deserved more support. Over many years, I have been supporting the band in many ways.
For the new band "All My Shadows" with their first album to be released February 17th, 2023, I wish Stephan and his band mates all the best. To me, their new song is fresh, catchy and an excellent work of music.
According the Frontier Records' information on All My Shadow's first music video, there had been plans to look for different singers for each song. In the end, it was decided to have Andy Kuntz sing all the songs. I think using different singers would have been a great idea for this project, too. For example, you can see with Ayreon or Avantasia how all participating musicians and the band can benefit from such a concept. I myself got to know other musicians and bands that way and became enthusiastic about Seventh Wonder or Circus Maximus.
I am excited to see what the debut album by All My Shadows will be like and whether it will be well received by the fans and also in the press. And I also hope to see Vanden Plas and the new band "All My Shadows" in some of Europe's big concert locations. A tour by each band individually or even a double-headliner tour would surely help them reach a larger audience.

Frontiers Records about All My Shadows:
Stephan Lill is the guitarist and musical backbone of the internationally known progressive metal band Vanden Plas. From the very beginning, he has been a huge influence on the sound and musical development of the band with his songwriting. Outside of Vanden Plas, Lill has also left his mark with his involvement in the rock operas/theater productions "Ludus Danielis, " "Christ 0," "The Chronicles of the Immortals," "Everyman," and "Last Paradise Lost".
Andy Kuntz is the charismatic and talented singer of Vanden Plas. With his distinctive voice, he moves effortlessly through all levels of vocal register and has established himself internationally as not only a rock/metal singer, but also as a lead in multiple rock musicals and operas. As the main lyricist and writer of the vocal melodies for Vanden Plas, he is the other musical mainstay and partner in crime with Lill in not only the band, but the aforementioned rock operas.
"The idea of recording and releasing some rock songs is something I've been thinking about for a while. While composing, I kept coming up with songs that have the spirit of the '80s. As a big fan of bands from that era, like Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, and the like, I still have a huge love for music from that time. The goal was to transport that classic music into the here and now. Hard rock with a powerful production, peppered with modern musical elements," says Lill.
The original idea for All My Shadows was to have different vocalists appear on the album. Lill brought in his musical partner Kuntz to write the lyrics for the songs. "We know each other inside and out, have been working together for a very long time and very well, and are a perfectly attuned team," he says. But once Kuntz was on board to write the lyrics and had demoed the first four songs with Lill, it was immediately clear to both musicians that Kuntz was the man for the job. "Why look far and away for several good singers, if the perfect singer is already there?" Lill muses.
While Lill and Kuntz continued to work on more songs, the aforementioned demos found their way to Frontiers Music Srl, Vanden Plas' current record label. Frontiers were also immediately enthusiastic about those demos and immediately and enthusiastically asked the band if they could be involved with releasing the music.
With the songs coming along nicely, the creative juices flowing, and a label home in place, Lill and Kuntz knew that a completely new entity had to be created, which would give the whole thing its own vibe and aura. When Kuntz came up with the name All My Shadows, they both knew that "the band name perfectly reflects the dark colorful aura of the lyrics and melody lines in a perfect way. The debut album, "Eerie Monsters" is an exciting musical journey through time, transporting our widely branched "heavy rock roots" into the present day in a melodically exciting symbiosis of retro ambience and modern sounds. Sonically, somewhat related to bands such as Ghost, Stone Sour, or SOEN, if you will, the music unfolds in an intoxicating manner. It's time for The New Retro-Rock!" declare Lill and Kuntz.
Keyboardist Markus Teske, who is also the owner of Bazement Studios and has been turning the knobs on the mixing desk for all of Vanden Plas' albums since 2002, was brought on board first. Beside being a superb engineer, he is a virtuoso at his instrument too. Then followed Franky R., a bassist who has played with renowned guitarist Michael Schenker, among others. And to keep it in the family, Stephan's brother Andreas Lill, also of Vanden Plas and who has a tremendous reputation for his musical experience and skill set, was brought in on drums to complete the line-up.
Lill and Kuntz unanimously answer with a clear "No!" whether the participation of the Vanden Plas musicians will bring All My Shadows too close sonically to Vanden Plas. Both musically and lyrically, the differences are too great, too tangible, too obvious. "Vanden Plas stands very much for progressive metal in all its variations, while All My Shadows stands very much for melodic hard rock. Musical points of contact are there, overlaps are not. All My Shadows have all the characteristics to have their own identity," says Lill.

Stephan Lill's - All my Shadows
Es war für mich eine riesige Überraschung, als ich über Facebook erfuhr, dass Stephan Lill und Andy Kuntz eine neue Band gegründet haben. Ich war davon überzeugt, dass hier etwas wirklich Besonderes die Mauern des Bazement Studios verlassen würde.
Seit Jahren kenne ich Vanden Plas, habe sie zwischenzeitlich mal aus den Augen verloren und dann 2014 mit ihrem Album "Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld" wieder entdeckt.
In all den Jahren habe ich nie eine Kopie ihrer selbst als Compact Disk in den Händen gehalten. Die beiden Komponisten mit dem größten Anteil ihrer Werke, also Günter Werno und Stephan Lill haben es immer wieder geschafft, außergewöhnliche Songs zu komponieren. Gespickt mit den fantastischen Texten von Andy Kuntz war es jedes Mal ein Genuss, die neuen Alben zu hören. Für mich sind sie einzigartig in der Prog-Metal-Szene. Zum Beispiel klingen die Werke von Avantasia nach den jeweiligen Bands der Sänger, Dream Theaters Songs sind mir oft zu theatralisch und Queensryche hatten für meinen Geschmack leider eine Zeitlang keine wirklich guten Alben. Einzig Ayreon sind ähnlich abwechslungsreich wie Vanden Plas. Nur klingen sie eben vollkommen anders.
Mich begeistert vieles an der Musik von Vanden Plas. Der hervorragende Gesang von Andy Kuntz, die coole und meist songdienliche Gitarrenarbeit von Stephan Lill mit ihren erfrischenden Solis, die ausgezeichneten Keyboardklänge von Günter Werno, die immer effektvoll und doch schlicht den Sound von Vanden Plas prägen, die Schlagzeugarbeit von Andreas Lill, die konstant und virtuos zusammen mit Torsten Reicherts ausgefallenen Bassläufen das Fundament der Songs von Vanden Plas bilden.
2018 hatte ich dann den deutschen Vanden Plas Fanclub auf Facebook gegründet und Andy Kuntz fragte mich, ob ich das nicht international machen möchte, weil ihm meine Arbeit gefiel. Eben weil ich der Meinung war, dass so eine Band wie Vanden Plas mehr Unterstützung verdient hat, habe ich das dann auch getan und u.a. diese Webseite ins Netz gestellt. Im Laufe der Jahre habe ich die Band in vielerlei Hinsicht unterstützt.
Jetzt mit dem neuen Song der Band "All My Shadows" und dem am 17. Februar erscheinenden Album "Eerie Monsters" wünsche ich Stephan und seiner Band viel Erfolg. Das neue Stück ist frisch, eingängig und musikalisch für mich wieder eine ausgezeichnete Arbeit.
Anfangs war es laut Frontiers Records Bericht zum Video geplant, verschiedene Sänger für die jeweiligen Songs zu suchen und man entschied sich dann doch, alle Stücke von Andy Kuntz singen zu lassen. Ich glaube ein solches Gesangsprojekt mit unterschiedlichen Sängern wäre noch effektiver gewesen, denn z.B. Ayreon oder Avantasia zeigen, dass alle beteiligten Musiker davon profitieren können. Ich selbst habe dadurch wieder andere Musiker und Bands kennengelernt und war z.B. von Seventh Wonder oder Circus Maximus begeistert.
Ich bin gespannt, wie das komplette Album sein wird und ob es bei den Fans und auch in den Magazinen gut ankommen wird. Natürlich hoffe ich, dass man Vanden Plas und natürlich die neue Band "All My Shadows" auch in den europäischen Hallen zu sehen bekommt, denn eine Tour der Bands allein oder noch besser vielleicht in einer "Double Headliner"-Tour würde ein größeres Publikum erreichen.

Mit All MY SHADOWS präsentiert sich eine der interessantesten deutschen Rockbands der letzten Jahre.
Ins Leben gerufen wurde das Quintett 2020 durch die beiden Vanden Plas-Musiker Stephan Lill und Andy Kuntz.
Stephan Lill ist Gitarrist und musikalisches Rückgrat der international bekannten Progressive Metal Band Vanden Plas. Von Beginn an ist er aufgrund seiner zahlreichen Kompositionen stilprägend für deren typischen Sound und dadurch entscheidend an der musikalischen Entwicklung von Vanden Plas beteiligt. Aber nicht nur hier, auch bei Rockopern wie "Ludus Danielis", "Christ 0", "Die Chronik der Unsterblichen", "Everyman" oder "Last Paradise Lost" haben seine Songs ebenfalls zum großen Erfolg dieser Theaterproduktionen beigetragen. Andy Kuntz ist der charismatische Sänger von Vanden Plas. Mit seiner markanten Stimme, die er mühelos durch alle Etagen der Stimmlagen bewegt, hat er sich international sowohl als Rock-Sänger, als auch als Hauptdarsteller in vielen Rockmusicals und Rockopern etabliert und seinen Ruf als ausgezeichneter Frontmann gefestigt. Als Texter, Librettist und Entwickler der Gesangsmelodien ist er die weitere musikalische tragende Säule bei Vanden Plas sowie bei den oben genannten Rockopern.
"Die Idee, einige meiner Lieder als Rock-Projekt neben Vanden Plas zu veröffentlichen, trage ich schon länger mit mir herum. Beim Komponieren entstehen immer wieder auch Lieder, die den Geist der 1980er atmen. Als großer Fan von Bands aus dieser Ära - wie z.B. Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne oder auch Dokken - schlägt mein Herz immer noch für Musik aus dieser Zeit. Ziel war es, diese Musik in das Jetzt und Heute zu transportieren - handgemachter Hardrock mit einer kraftvollen Produktion, gespickt mit modernen musikalischen Elementen."
Die Ursprungsidee zielte darauf ab, die Songs von unterschiedlichen Sängern für ein einmaliges Rockprojekt einsingen zu lassen. Dafür sind neben der Musik selbstverständlich auch aussagekräftige Texte notwendig. Hierfür lag es nahe, mit Vanden Plas-Sänger Andy Kuntz seinen langjährigen musikalischen Weggefährten mit ins Boot zu hohlen. "Wir kennen uns in - und auswendig, arbeiten schon sehr lange und sehr gut zusammen und sind ein perfekt eingespieltes Team." Ein immenser Vorteil beim Songwriting.
Für All My Shadows war geplant, das Kuntz zu den Kompositionen von Stephan Lill die Liedtexte beisteuert, mit ihm zusammen die Gesangslinien entwickelt und als Sänger selbst bei einigen Songs auf der CD auch den Leadgesang übernimmt. Doch es kam anders als geplant ...
Als Kuntz die ersten vier Songs als Demoversion eingesungen hatte war beiden Musikern sofort eines klar: Das Ergebnis war mehr als überzeugend, und die Idee eines Rockprojektes mit mehreren Sängern passé. "Warum in der Ferne nach mehreren guten Sängern suchen, wenn der perfekte Sänger schon vor Ort ist?"- für Lill eine nachvollziehbare und einleuchtende Angelegenheit.
Während weiter fleißig am Songmaterial getüftelt wurde, hatte besagtes Demo den Weg zu Frontiers Records, der aktuellen Plattenfirma von Vanden Plas gefunden. Frontiers Records, die u.a. so namhafte Bands wie Journey, Whitesnake oder Styx in ihrem Portfolio haben, waren von den ersten vier Songs ebenfalls direkt begeistert, der Plattendeal die erfreuliche Folge - was in der heutigen Zeit keine Selbstverständlichkeit mehr ist.
Und damit war ebenfalls eine weitere Entscheidung gefallen: Für ein einmaliges Projekt war beiden die Sache im Zuge des Arbeitsprozesses zu wichtig geworden. Es musste eine komplett neue Band ins Leben gerufen werden, die dem Ganzen einen eigenen Charakter sowie einen speziellen Wiedererkennungswert gibt. Als Kuntz mit der Namensidee All My Shadows aufwartete war auch dieser äussert wichtige Aspekt für die weitere Planung ohne Umschweife abgedeckt. "Der Bandname spielgelt die dunkelbunte Aura der Liedtexte in perfekter Weise wider."
Um das All My Shadows-Line-Up für die Aufnahmen zur ersten CD zu komplettieren ging es auf die Suche nach passenden Mitmusikern. Diese gedanklich intensive Reise gestaltete sich aber glücklicherweise zu einer kurzen Expedition.
Mit Keyboarder Markus Teske hat man einen virtuosen Fachmann an den Tasten, der zudem als Inhaber der Bazement Studios nicht nur in der Rockszene ein gefragter Sound-Engineer ist. Seit 2002 dreht er auch bei allen CD-Produktionen von Vanden Plas die Knöpfe am Mischpult und pflegt damit eine lange berufliche und freundschaftliche Beziehung zu den beiden Frontleuten. Gleiches gilt für Franky R.: Der Bassist ist ein international renommierter Musiker, der u.a. schon bei der Band von Ex-Scorpions-Gitarrist Michael Schenker in die tiefen Saiten gegriffen hat. Und mit Stephans Bruder Andreas Lill, seines Zeichens Drummer bei Vanden Plas, hat man einen der besten Rockschlagzeuger Deutschlands im Line-Up, welcher weltweilt höchstes Ansehen für sein versiertes und gleichzeitig band-dienliches Drumming genießt.
Ob durch das Mitwirken der Vanden Plas-Musiker eine zu große Nähe zu dieser Band besteht, beantworten Lill und Kuntz einhellig mit einem klaren "Nein!". Sowohl musikalisch als auch textlich sind die Unterschiede zu groß, zu greifbar, zu offensichtlich.
"Natürlich hört man heraus, wer die Songs geschrieben hat. Vanden Plas stehen für Progressive Metal in all seinen Variationen, All My Shadows für melodiösen Hardrock. Musikalische Berührungspunkte sind vorhanden, Überschneidungen nicht. All My Shadows haben genügend Merkmale für eine eigene Identität."
Die Anfang 2023 erscheinende CD mit dem Titel "Eerie Monsters" beinhaltet 9 Songs. Vom treibenden Opener "Silent Waters" über die radiotaugliche Ballade "Farewell" bis hin zum schweren Riffmonster "Wolverinized" ist alles vorhanden wonach sich ein Freund melodiöser und dennoch kraftvoller Rockmusik sehnt. Die moderne, druckvolle Produktion tut ihr übriges, um die Lieder ins rechte Licht zu rücken.
